Internet Marketing Tips - SEO: Why You Do It, Where You Do It And Should You Use Outside Help?

You can't throw a virtual stick these days without hitting the concept of SEO, or search engine optimization. There are some good reasons for this, and some not so good reasons. What we'll do in this article is to try to separate the fact from the myth and give you some guidance on what SEO is all about and how to use it to your advantage, be it on your own or with professional help.

So let's start with some of the misconceptions about search engine optimization. The best place to start here is probably to tell you to beware of those who say they can get you ranked number one, or in the top ten on Google in a few days or a week. To put it bluntly, this is BS. While you can work your way up, it takes time and a lot of hard work.

Secondly, many people will give you the impression that the internet marketing sun, and maybe even "real world" marketing rises and sets on SEO. As if this were the only thing you had to do. While it's important, and quite frankly, more far reaching than you think, it's only the beginning of marketing success, not the end.

One more quick misconception is SEO only applies to your website or websites. This is not true. In some form or another, search engine optimization touches every bit of online content you publish. We're talking from your website to your YouTube channel to your Facebook page to an article like this one. Confused yet? Well, let's get into the core of this article, based on the questions in the title. Hopefully that'll clear it all up for you.

Why SEO?

Part of the answer to this question is to explain one of the core factors that search engines like Google, yahoo, Bing and others use to rank pages. And this is link relevance. Any internet location you want to promote should be suspended in a virtual web of links to other internet locations, preferably those that are similar in nature to yours.

So, how does this tie into SEO? Well, link building is part of SEO. And everything you put online, with few exceptions, can be indexed by search engines. So you want to make sure that every bit of content you publish and link is optimized to be found by the largest possible number of searchers.

This is the reason why SEO is so important, because it applies to everything. You will want to optimize your website, of course, as well as an article like this, or your blog, or you're Facebook pages, your YouTube channel, your discussion forums posts, even the way you register a domain name. We could go on and on here, but this is not a tutorial on SEO, but an explanation of the concept itself.

And actually, I've just answered the Where you do it question too. The short answer is: everywhere. You want every title, every summary, every description, every link and every post to be keyword rich. Suffice it to say, SEO can be a complex and even convoluted subject.

Which brings us to the final thought: Should you hire some outside help for your SEO, or any internet marketing needs?

This is a difficult question to answer, especially since the author of this piece is an internet marketer. You might think that I'm biased if I say you should hire some help. Perhaps there is a bias at work, but you may need some help nonetheless.

It's really up to you. Do you want to take the time to become an expert in this crazy mixed up topic? To spend hours and hours every week tweaking Meta tags and page titles and linking and researching and listening to a hundred different people tell you a thousand different things? You might, and there is admittedly some value in the concept of SEO D.I.Y. No one has ever been too hurt by learning something new, that's for sure.

However, you might also want to weigh the costs of time and money. Are you really interested in becoming an internet marketing and SEO guru? Or do you just want to make more money? After all, the long and short of it is, as entrepreneurs, we just don't have enough time in the day to do it all. And hiring somebody who knows their stuff can pay off very well in the long run. Much more than the costs involved.

This probably seems a bit contradictory. If not, let me muddy the waters a bit more. I've often said in other articles that no matter what business you are in, your real business is in "marketing" your product or service. That's what fills the piggy bank. And even if you do hire somebody to help with SEO and other things online, you should take some time to do a bit of research and learn a bit about it yourself. If for no other reason than you can speak with your marketer intelligently and know whether or not he or she is doing a good job.

Hopefully this article has helped and not confused you any further. As I mentioned, SEO is a complicated topic. And think of it, we haven't even really discussed the nuts and bolts of how to do it. It's confusing enough just discussing why and where you should do it. Not to mention making the decision to hire a SEO expert. But if you take anything away from this, know that SEO is vitally important. It can't be ignored and must be done. So I wish you good luck and successful optimizing!
